HISTORY |
2nd Building Program |
In the late Fall of 1960 the property at 3844
Jackman Rd. came up for sale and the church decided to purchase it. By that time the
mortgage was paid down to about $15,500.00. The church was remortgaged and bought
the house for $12,500.00. Shortly afterwards, the Detroit Avenue building sold for
$11,000.00 to Standard Oil. This property had been rented for five years for a total
of $6,000.00. This money helped to provide a solid financial base for future
expansion. Since overcrowded conditions were already prevalent, the house was used
to accommodate the Primary and Junior Departments of the Sunday School until 1965.
The mortgage was paid off in 1964 and
immediately a new building program was instituted to prepare for further construction.
In June 1965, ground was broken for a new sanctuary and construction started August
1. What a tremendous difference there was between 1956 and 1965 in the ease of
obtaining mortgage money. The Toledo Trust Bank agreed to a loan of $65,000.00 and
then an additional $15,000.00 making the loan $80,000.00. Just before and during the
time of construction the church was able to raise $25,000.00 so the total cost of the new
sanctuary, offices, Sunday School rooms and equipment was $105,000.00.
With the occupancy of the new building, the
Primary and Junior Departments were returned to the church building and the house at 3844
Jackman Rd. was used as a home for the caretaker. However, overcrowded conditions
were soon to return and new plans to expand became necessary. Definitely more Sunday
School room was needed. Between 1972 and 1975 four more houses along Jackman Rd.
were purchased to provide for Sunday School rooms, parsonages and rental properties.
Not only have these houses been helpful in the growth of the Sunday School, they
have also figured into the ability of the church to relocate to its Sylvania Avenue site.
